This is a three part series of workshops to run November 2nd, 3rd and 9th. Its best if you come to all three, as each day supports one another in learnings, but you are also welcome join one or two evenings in the series alone.  No prior experience is required.

Please bring cash for this by donation event.  Suggested donation is $10-20.  No one will be turned away for a lack of funds.

What I call our Empowered Adult Core is one that:
  • Delivers assertive, healthy, constructive anger (or message) that is responsive (rather than reactive)
  • Handles (rather than escalates) conflict without emotional/physical violence, and
  • Holds our own power (without disconnecting from our power, nor "stealing" it from others)

Beyond NVC

In NVC workshops, we often focus on learning about word choice for communicating what's important to us. In this workshop series, we will be addressing lesser "attended to"aspects of communication that can either weaken or empower our NVC message when we are scared or angry, and want to de-escalate conflict.

The workshop primarily deals with special cases, such as bullying, harassment and assault -- asking what special skills (and often neglected elements) can we draw upon to invite or deter the type of behavior we would welcome. If you're not interested in that area of application, you may still find its applicable to other life situations.

  • Body language accounts for over 80% of communication, and unfortunately most of us don't know what messages we are communicating with our bodies.  So we'll be trying out body language that gives off the vibe of passivity (scared inner child - power under),aggression (reactive anger that steals others' power and escalates conflict - power over), and our empowered adult core (assertive, healthy, constructive anger that holds our own power). We will do activities that contrast each of these experiences so we can get a "felt sense" of what its like to embody or receive that vibe or nonverbal communication (ie. body language, tone, etc).
  • We'll do a guided visualization for connecting to our inner child that gets scared in the face of conflict.  We'll create a safe inner place as a resource for her/him.  And once that is established, connect her/him to your empowered adult core -- one who delivers assertive, healthy, constructive anger. (Did you know that same part of the brain that operates anger also operates vitality, creativity and passion?)
  • Learn how to express your mixed "no" with simple, clear, direct language.

This workshop includes educational pieces, activities, and demos.

Hi Melissa,

I am getting in touch with you to tell you that I had to return to Brazil due to my older sister's passing away last week. I tried to send you a message directly to you but it seemed that it didn't work. I will be back in the begining of December. Wish you all the best on this workshop and say that I really appreciated to join.  Alfredo

Dear Alfredo,
I know your note was addressed to Melissa, but I saw the message and wanted to respond.  I am so sorry to hear of the death of your sister. I'm guessing you felt so far away from your family when you heard. I imagine that your presence is a great comfort to your family there.

We will look forward to seeing you back in the group when you return to Vancouver.
Best regards,
Nancy

Dear Nancy,

Thank you so much for your support in this moment of grief.
Yes, indeed, that was the feeling I had when I heard it, and it has being important for me and my family that we are together now.
I am looking forward too to seeing you all in my return to Vancouver.

Best regards,

Alfredo
